Looking at buying a new car in the next couple of months. I have noticed the hyundai coupe and quite like the look of them, my Dad has always told me to stay away from makes like hyundai but im just wondering have they improved over the years? What is the build quality like and are they reliable ? Im looking at the 2005 model. Other cars im interested in is the Vauxhall astra convertable (Mk4) and the Toyota Celica 1.8. How does the Hyundai compare to these ? Should i stay away or should I go and have a look at some.

Thanks in advance

Hyundai has majorly stepped-up their game in recent years, especially with their high-end models, like the Equus and Genesis. Those are great cars. Their other cars, like the Elantra, Sonata, Tiburon, and even their crossovers and SUVs, are nice and reliable, but, if you have a chance, give one of those a test-drive. When driving those, I could feel a big difference from Hondas, Toyotas, ans Nissans. The Hyundais are priced better, and they give a great warranty, if you are buying from the dealership. Take some test-drives, and you may find yourself liking the Hyundai. In the end, I was most attracted to Honda and Nissan, and I went with Honda.

Nice looking car, but at best average reliability & very poor handling in terms of sports cars.

The Astra isn't bad - but it's a family hatchback that's been made into a convertible: Go for a high spec rather than a 'sport' model, there are plenty of low mileage examples around.

The Celica is a competent car, but in my humble opinion it's as ugly as sin - in the flesh they look alarmingly like a Ford Focus of the same age.

I'd consider any one of these cars at seven years old, as you may be better off looking at condition and history of an individual car. It's certainly worth driving a couple of examples of each car at that age.

Your Dad is wrong. Hyundai topped the reliability chart in a magazine i was reading, BMW was 2nd. Toyota and Vauxhall are unreliable if you ask me. Vauxhall are very very cheap plastic interior-wise. Anyway!! my point is, I owned a Coupe for 4 years. Highly reliable, never a single fault, cheap insurance, TAX & MOT. Lovely interior & MPG is good. Get one, forget Vauxhall!!!

Test them and have a look. They are very unique. If you are on a tight budget go for the 2.0T, affordable. If you can drive a manual, even better. It'll be cheaper then auto. Very reliable as long as your not beating it everyday i.e. redlining.

p.s. i own a genesis coupe 3.8 R-Spec .. pretty satisfied. a little problems here and there, but i can adjust.
